Diseases of the Soul

I am always amazed at how in the midst of the greatest tragedies, God has an uncanny way of doing incredible good. I guess it is all wrapped up in that verse in Romans “We know that in all things, God works together for the good of those who love Him, and are according to His purposes” (Rom 8:28). The global HIV/AIDS pandemic is is a terrible tragedy, no doubt about it; and yet, it presents many unique opportunities to share the gospel.

We were privileged recently to be able to share at some factories about HIV with the workers. We would discuss the medical perspectives about HIV, it’s prevention and treatment. And then we would come to the crunch – we would explain that we would like to warn them about another dangerous disease, even more deadly than HIV.

Here the eyes of the crowd would widen in alarm.

“HIV is a disease in our body,” we would share. “But this other deadly disease is a disease of the soul!”

This disease is called sin, and unlike HIV, there is a cure – His name is Jesus Christ! HIV can kill the body, but it cannot kill the soul.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from His love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. HIV can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away…nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that’s revealed in Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38 – 39 (bold text added)
